To say last Saturday’s stoppage of Brandon Vera’s bout against Fabricio Werdum at UFC 85 was controversial would be an understatement. According to Vera, Werdum pretty much promised him that he would give him a re-match. Vera was stopped towards the end of the 1stRound when Werdum had secured the full-mount and started to strike, but Vera had told the referee Dan Miragliotta, “I’m OK, I’m OK, I’m OK.” Instead, Miragliotta aired on the side of caution and stopped the fight.
Vera was none to happy to say the least, as he was visibly upset after he told the media, “he [Werdum] said yes, or at least I thought he said yes to a rematch in the cage after the fight, but now he’s telling me to get back in the queue.”
Where does Vera go from here? Simple, he’s just going to wait it out. “I hope you win that title Fabricio, because I’m really looking forward to fighting you again.” Vera proclaimed.
Now, Werdum has to see when he will be able to take on one of his childhood heroes, and current UFC Heavyweight Champion, Antonio Rodrigo Noguiera. He’s already lost to him once, so we’ll have to wait and see if Werdum has what it takes to become the UFC champion.
Noguiera is scheduled to be a Coach on The Ultimate Fighter Season 8, opposite Frank Mir. The two will then face off for the title when the show wraps late this year.
Vera will be waiting in the wings.
