Welterweight king Georges St-Pierre (Pictured) has torn the ACL in his knee and will be forced out of his UFC 143 title fight against Nick Diaz. As we all know fully well, the Octagon show waits for no man as Carlos Condit will now meet Diaz for the interim 170-pound crown on February 4th.
“GSP blown acl will be out for 10 mos. Now Condit vs Diaz for the interim welterweight title on Feb 4th in Las Vegas!!” UFC president Dana White tweeted just moments ago.
Condit was scheduled to challenge St-Pierre for his crown at UFC 137, but knee and hamstring injuries forced GSP out just 18 days before showtime.
White has since confirmed that St-Pierre’s injury is to the same knee that forced him to withdraw from the October contest.
Condit was awarded the title shot after Diaz blew his opportunity by ditching back-to-back “beauty pageants” to promote the pay-per-view broadcast.
Speaking of Mr. 209, Diaz leapfrogged back into a championship affair against St-Pierre after steamrolling BJ Penn. White claimed Condit was fine with the switcheroo as long as he was allowed to fight on the same card as St-Pierre and Diaz, which appears to have ultimately paid off for “The Natural Born Killer.”
Condit was slated to fight Josh Koscheck in the event. It is unknown whether Koshceck will remain on the card.
The Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada is expected to play host. The interim welterweight title bout now headlines the pay-per-view broadcast.
Here is the card’s updated roster:
Josh Koscheck vs. TBD
Rafael Natal vs. Michael Kuiper
Jorge Lopez vs. Amir Sadollah
Alex “Bruce Leeroy” Caceres vs. Edwin Figueroa
Erik Koch vs. Dustin Poirer
Carlos Condit vs. Nick Diaz (Interim UFC Welterweight Title)
