After months of speculation, both Chairman and Chief Strategy Officer Doug DeLuca, and EliteXC Live Events President Gary Shaw, have resigned from their positions with ProElite, Inc., the parent company of Elite Xtreme Combat. Their resignations were confirmed with their filings with the Securities Exchange Committee.
UFC light heavyweight competitor, James Irvin, has allegedly tested positive for the non-approved analgesic painkillers Methadone and Oxymorphone. The post-fight urinalysis was conducted by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
MMA veteran, John Alessio, has signed a three-fight contract with EliteXC. The 29 year old fighter has bounced around from organization to organization for quite some time, having competed in both the UFC and WEC. It seems as though the 23-11 Alessio may have finally found a home after years of instability and uncertainty.
Yahoo! Sports is reporting that former 5-time UFC light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz is close to signing with the upstart MMA organization, Affliction. Current Affliction light heavyweight Renato "Babalu" Sobral has stated that he wants Ortiz as his next opponent, but that it was up to, "(Affliction) to sign him [Ortiz] first."
New Affliction event, same old fighters. Heavyweight competitor, Pedro Rizzo, confirmed that he will be competing on Affliction's second promotional event on October 11th in Las Vegas, Nevada. There has yet to be an announcement on who his opponent will be, however the rumor is that Paul Buentello is a likely candidate. Also, fellow heavyweight, Tim Sylvia, believes that he will be competing on the card as well.
Top ranked light heavyweight, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, recently updated the MMA world on a possible return date, and opponent. The former PrideFC superstar has been rehabilitating his surgically repaired knee since his loss to current UFC 205-pound champion, Forrest Griffin, back in September of 2007.
Current UFC welterweight champion, Georges St-Pierre, is not only the best 170-pound fighter in the world, but he is also one of the most popular in the sport. Usually, when you possess one of those bargaining chips it is easy to walk up to the negotiating table with confidence. However, when you have both, you potentially find yourself expecting more than what the company is willing to offer. It is almost time for GSP to renew his contract with the UFC, and it is going down to the wire.
Coming off of a victory at “Affliction: Banned,” Renato “Babalu” Sobral is already petitioning for his next opponent. At the post-fight presser, Sobral was asked about a possible fight with Antonio Rogerio Nogueira but admitted there was someone else he wanted to fight, “that’s not the fight [Nogueira] I’m looking for; I’m looking for another guy,” Sobral replied. After a recent interview, we now know who that other guy is. “I want Tito Ortiz. I’m going after that motherf****r, I’ll fuck him (laughs) … But let them (Affliction) sign him first,” Sobral told Tatame.
UFC middleweight contender Michael Bisping recently spoke to the UK’s Sun, and although he praised Silva’s recent run in the UFC, it sounds more like he’s setting up the showdown that the UFC is aiming towards. “Anderson’s run is not going to go on forever,” Bisping proclaimed.
MMA veteran, and current IFL welterweight champion Jay Hieron, is playing the waiting game, much like the rest of the MMA world. We have already confirmed that the IFL will be officially closing its doors come July 31st, however nobody at the moment can confirm with 100% certainty who has purchased the financially challenged organization...wink, wink, the UFC. More importantly for Hieron, he wonders where his rejuvenated career goes from here.
