Little did the mixed martial arts world know, UFC president Dana White would be handing out top contender monikers like hotcakes during Wednesday’s conference call. Just seconds after confirming a victorious Nate Diaz would earn next dibs at the lightweight crown if he beats Jim Miller on Saturday, White laid out the same stipulation for “UFC on FOX 3’s” co-featured attraction.
“Should Diaz win, Diaz is definitely getting a title shot,” White flatly said. “Should Miller win, Miller’s probably gonna be a fight or two away.”
When asked if we could simply replace Diaz’s name with Johny Hendricks’ (Pictured) and Miller’s with Josh Koscheck’s in his statement, White responded in the affirmative.
“Exactly,” White expressed. “I would definitely agree with that, too.”
Hendricks has rattled of three consecutive victories, with his most recent coming in a UFC 141 knockout of Koscheck’s BFF, Jon Fitch. Hendricks was hoping the December win would have catapulted him directly into a championship affair, but the bearded brawler will have to prove his mettle one more time to secure his spot.
Koscheck will be entering his 23rd professional bout this weekend, with all but two of those battles taking place inside the Octagon. After losing to reigning 170-pound king Georges St-Pierre at UFC 124, which resulted in the 34-year-old’s right eye looking like THIS, Kos has managed to right the ship by posting back-to-back wins.
No word on where White’s announcement leaves Jake Ellenberger and Martin Kampmann. Many believed the victor their June 1st shootout would be next in line for a shot at the throne.
IZOD Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey hosts Saturday’s fiesta. FOX will broadcast the main card live beginning at 8PM ET/5PM PT.
