“Google me, bitch.” Those three words will likely haunt UFC bantamweight Cody Gibson (pictured) for the rest of his life.
Gibson uttered the words this past weekend before getting socked in the face at a bar in Las Vegas.
If the attacker would have whipped out his iPhone instead of winging a haymaker, he would have discovered Gibson is a professional mixed martial artist for the UFC.
Instead of engaging in a standup battle, Gibson shot for a double-leg takedown on his fellow bar patron. He would have secured it had his opponent’s friend not intervened. Who knows what would have happened if Gibson had landed in top position?
Regardless, Gibson admits it was a drunken mistake that he wish never happened.
“This guy was being a typical kind of bro and started saying some stuff to me. At first, I told him I did not want to fight, two or three times. He was definitely egging on the situation, and then he started to irritate me,” Gibson told Sherdog Radio. “Then I told him who I was, which was probably the worst idea, because then, after that, I feel like he really wanted to fight. And then, yeah, man, one thing led to another. I don’t know, man. [It’s] definitely not something I’m proud of.
“When he punched me, luckily I didn’t start throwing punches. Luckily, I just shot the takedown and his buddies kind of grabbed on to me, and it was done by that point. I’m actually fortunate that it kind of ended the way it did. Had I beat the hell out of him or something, I think it could be a whole lot worse situation.”
Because Gibson didn’t land and strikes or takedowns, in fact he ate about five unanswered punches and left the bar with a black eye, he believes his job with the UFC is not in jeopardy over the intoxicated incident.
However, “The Renegade” has lost two of his last three pro fights and will likely be issued his walking papers if he drops his next contest.
