It wasn’t exactly the opponent Jake Ellenberger had his sights set on, but it’s certainly a steep step up in competition nonetheless. According to MMAJunkie, the underrated welterweight will face former top contender Jon Fitch at UFC 126 during Super Bowl weekend.
Ellenberger was last seen posting an impressive 3rdRound TKO victory over John Howard at “UFC on Versus 2.” The 25-year-old parlayed his second consecutive win into a four-fight Octagon extension. He owns a dominant 22-5 professional record and has finished off 19 of his victims before the final horns have sounded.
The Nebraskan, who will continue his development at Mark Munoz’s famed Reign Training Center in Lake Forrest, California, recently flung some Twitter disses at Jake Shields. After a long awaited and much talked about UFC debut, the former Strikeforce middleweight champ admittedly looked unimpressive in his controversial split decision win over Martin Kampmann at UFC 121.
Speaking of less than thrilling, Fitch has received quite a bit of flack from fanboys worldwide for his inability to finish fights. Although he owns an imposing 23-3 resume, 13 of his wins have come via decision. The grappler’s last eight contests have all gone to the judges’ scorecards. He’s won all of them except a lopsided trouncing to reigning 170-pound king Georges St-Pierre at UFC 87.
UFC 126 takes place inside the Mandalay Bay Event Center in Las Vegas, Nevada on February 5th.
Here are the fighters rumored/expected to participate in the pay-per-view broadcast:
Kenny Florian vs. Evan Dunham
Jake Ellenberger vs. Jon Fitch
Ryan Bader vs. Jon Jones
Forrest Griffin vs. Rich Franklin
Vitor Belfort vs. Anderson Silva (UFC Middleweight Champion)
